Few people took The Go-Go’s seriously. Not the Los Angeles punk scene that spawned the band, because The Go-Go’s were staggeringly incompetent—even by punk standards—in the early days and too pop and careerist once they got their shit together. Not the major labels, which had never earned enough of a return on an all-female band to justify the investment. Not the press, which tended to sound condescending even when it praised the group.
